Surge Protection

We count on our air conditioning systems to keep us cool and comfortable in the heat. However, most home owners never consider protecting their air conditioning systems from power surges.  Home owners protect less expensive electrical equipment, like televisions and computers, with surge protectors but neglect their more expensive air conditioning systems.

A power surge is an increase in voltage above the normal flow of electricity.  The standard voltage is 240 volts. When this voltage increases, your air conditioning equipment is at risk.  A power surge occurs when something causes the charge to increase. One of the causes is lightning.  Lightning can cause an extremely large power surge. It can hit an electrical line, travel underground or down a building.  It can boost, temporarily, electrical pressures by millions of volts.

Operation of high-power electrical devices like your air conditioning system or refrigerator can cause power surges.  When equipment like these turn on and off, components like the compressor or motor draw an increase in energy. This causes a quick demand for power which can upset the standard flow of voltage in your electrical system. This demand is small compared to a lightning strike but can cause damage to components over a period of time.  Faulty wiring and down utility wires also cause surges.

Surge protectors do not offer 100% protection from surges but can protect your equipment from every day spikes and surges that can wear your systems components down over time. It can also help protect you A/C system from severe storms. A surge protector should offer repeatability.  It should not have to be changed out after every hit, but may need to be replaced after a large hit or over a period time of repeated hits. When protecting your air conditioning equipment, you must protect the condenser unit (outdoor unit), the air handler (indoor unit) and the breakers for proper protection. We can install a surge protection kit that comes with 3 protectors to cover all 3 parts of the system.  It comes with a lifetime warranty and if the protector needs to be replaced due to a powerful surge or high usage, it will be replaced.

DIGITAL THERMOSTAT

Thermostats are something most of us do not think about. It is usually the least expensive component of your air conditioning system. It plays a major role in energy efficiency. Your air conditioning system utilizes the most energy in your home. Why not choose a thermostat that fits your family's needs and lifestyle and can save you money on your utility bill.

Every new system comes with a new Honeywell thermostat. The thermostat's job is to stop and start your heating and cooling system and to maintain a chosen temperature.  The thermostat is the comfort keeper of your household. A digital thermostat works with a thermistor to measure temperature. A thermistor is a resistor with electrical resistance that changes with temperature. The microcontroller inside the thermostat measures the resistance and converts it into a number (a temperature reading).

A programmable thermostat allows you to set various temperature settings for different times of the day or night and for different days. For example, if you work Monday thru Friday from 9 am to 5 pm you can program your thermostat to raise the temperature to 82 degrees while you are at work and lower the temperature back down to 74 degrees just before you come home.  You can also set a different program for the weekend when you are home all day.  That is not only more convenient than changing temperatures manually (and your programmable thermostat won't forget), but it will also save money on your utility bill .

New digital thermostats are more accurate and environmentally friendly than an old, mercury bulb thermostats.  Older thermostats can have up to a 5 degree temperature variation. New thermostats are accurate to plus or minus 1 degree. Less variation in temperature means you will be changing your temperature less often inside your home. That will save you money on your electric bill!
